I am currently thinking of new instruments to get into since I am now comfortable with a few, and I was listening to a song today that featured an instrument I couldn't recognize.

How can I figure out what an instrument is on a song?

For example: What is the instrument that starts at 1:13 of the video. Is it a mandolin?

Welcome to this site @Jeff! This kind of question is off topic here, since it won't be of any use to future readers. I edited your question to make a more general one. Feel free to edit it something else if you want, but identifications of specific instruments are off topic. – Shevliaskovic May 19 '14 at 7:12
I don't feel that trying to change the question into something it's not was effective or appropriate here. – Matthew Read May 21 '14 at 3:32

Yes, that's a mandolin. It's a bit hard to make out in the recording because of the amount of reverb.
