In this price range, guitars are pretty much the same in term of woods, of course there is two major categories : Startocasters like (S type) ans Gibson type (G type) S types comes with single coils and woods that sound clean G types are equiped with humbuckers and are offently made of mahogany, wich have a better sustain.

S types guitars would be squier, lag (jet model) or other brands that looks like a stratocaster. G types guitar would be Epinphone and LTD (more metal, not very smooth)

Your choice will be based on what you want more : If you really want a clean tone guitar, go for a S type If you want to play some heavy riffs with a disto, go for a G type.

But, as I said, in this price range, differences between guitars are not huge, you can play whatever you want on it, it will sound good (not as good as a midrange guitar, but good enough) So pick a guitar that is beautiful to you. If the guitar you buy is beautiful, every time you'll see it, you will play with it. The more you play with it, better the sound is.

ejay - this is not a recommendations/comparisons site. There are plenty of them on the Internet. This site is about practice and performance. – Dr Mayhem Jun 24 '14 at 20:46
