(the title needs to be reprhased somehow...)

I currently own : - a Godin guitar - a Roland GR-20 - a Novation UltraNova - a Yamaha V50 - a computer :)

What device would it be the most wise to buy to add the ability to tap into a very large library of percussion / drum samples ?

A physical sampler ? A software sampler (how about latency problems in that case ?) ?

What would be the best source to get thousands of free high-quality samples ?

Check out the free and open source Hydrogen drum sequencer. Makes high quality drum sounds. – naught101 Sep 14 '12 at 9:46

can't your Ultranova or V50 do drums?

Any less than 5 year old pc with modern softsynth (that uses windows WASAPI api) should not have any latency probs. WASAPI (on Vista or better) let's your soundcard tell your softsynth the best it can do so you shouldn't even NEED to config latency.

and you can find free drum .WAV files all over the place on the web.

That looks pretty cool! Even if you end up going the softsynth route later, you've got some great pads and knobs. I've got those on my Edirol PCR-800. There are a few cool drum samplers out there like:

EZ Drummer

Addictive Drums

Rayzoon Jamstix

I have EZ Drummer and it's quite cool. You can also get lots of midi drum loops from Groovemonkee.

I've also used Rayzoon which has quite a cool algorithm for simulating 'real' drummers.

They are becoming more and more popular these days and are sounding better and better (addictive drums is better sounding IMO)

You'd need a vst host as well.
