I'm completely new to audio processing, but here's an idea I would like at least a "yay" or "nay" on technical feasibility...

Might it be possible to take nearly any track of rock music and do the following with software:

  1. separate the vocals (using the typical lame methods -- emphasizing the center-positioned audio, etc)
  2. send the vocals through a filter that removes tonality and another one that introduces some rough-grain distortion
  3. mix these altered vocals back into the track and viola! you have a screamo version for the sake of silly gags

You probably got a downvote for this being an open-ended, chatty question. If you formulated it more along the lines of, "what audio processing techniques can be used to isolate and modify the vocals of a recording" and then mention that your focus is on making screamo versions of songs in the body. – Dave Jan 16 at 22:52

@marienbad Would you mind editing this question to focus only on the techniques for distorting the voice track? The track separation and remixing don't really seem relevant to the core of your question, and you will get better answers (and more upvotes) if you limit yourself to just that substance. – NReilingh♦ Jan 17 at 0:17

You could definitely do this - although you'd probably need to add a little delay to the clean path to match that of the dirty path, otherwise you may find the vocals start clean and scream up immediately afterwards.

Remember that the vocals will never be cleanly separated, so you are likely to get some of the instruments in the mix as well. This may or may not be a good thing :-)

Try it - you may like it.

Yeah, it's something you could do, but just to be clear, it won't end up with the same results as recording actual screaming. That's not a criticism, of course, unless that's your goal! – snailplane Jan 17 at 12:18
