Programming is my life; music is my passion. Flute is my primary instrument. I also play or have played most of the brass family and toyed with percussion. I love band music. Orchestrally I prefer Baroque and Classical music, as well as soundtrack/musical styles.
My favorite composers include:
The obvious:
- Mozart
- Bach
- Beethoven
- Chaminade
- John Williams
Not so obvious
- John Rutter
- Robert W. Smith
- Handel
- Attolah Shabbaz

Pros and cons of different types of vibrato on trumpet How would diaphramatic vibrato disturb your support and airstream? Voice and woodwinds use this technique; does the greater physical requirements for brass make that much of a difference? |

Pros and cons of different types of vibrato on trumpet "properly inducing tremelo in voice carries over" - I've found this to be true with flute(my main instrument) as well. |

Why do people say “you are a little flat” and never “you are are a little sharp”? +1 When choirs sing a cappella, they tend to go flat because the throat muscles have to contract to sing higher, and it takes more energy and concentration to sing faster. |

Trumpet low C# and D I used to play 4-valve tuba and 3-valve sousaphone, and always missed having the fourth valve (the the tuning slides were all stuck - school instrument :)). BTW, there are also four-valve trumpets, though rare. |

What is the importance of practicing scales on piano, and the proper fingering of them? I use scales for practicing styles too. You haven't lived until you swing a F# major scale! |

What is the importance of practicing scales on piano, and the proper fingering of them? @idober: The third movement of Mozart's flute concerto in G has scales everywhere. D and G are the ones I remember for sure. I think there's a harmonic minor in there too, but I can't say for sure. |

Can you directly start to learn the alto flute without beginning by the C-flute? Just as a note - really the only differences is a slightly relaxed embrouchure and more air. That being said, learning a C flute first will help you work to the "more air" part more easily. |

Are sweet drinks bad for singing? Anecdotal, but I've never had a problem. However, there was a time when caffinated drinks seemed to affect my vibrato quality. |

Why do minor keys sound “sad”? Yes, and also songs like "We Three Kings" use it to convey a more formal tone. I see minor keys as emotional, not merely sad. |

Why is the piano such a commonly used instrument? However, IME piano composers are far more common... |

How to prevent a string from breaking during a performance? I saw a harp string break in the middle of a performance one time - fortunately she didn't have a solo that day! |
