Differences between the concept of Scales , Raagas, and Thaaths? 72 is the 'basic' number of scales in carnatic, with uniform, sequential ascend and descend based just on the permutations of notes. Differences between the concept of Scales , Raagas, and Thaaths? (1) vertical - harmony; chords, progressions, counterpoint ... (2) We learn notes, scales, ornaments, phrases and think these make up (Create) a raga. But, IMHO, Raga is the beginning, scales/ornaments etc are ways to understand the raga. |

What are the most effective ear training methods ? I know associating a familiar tune to a particular interval is a widely used idea. But it should be avoided while actively working out the exercise, because here the idea is to develop the ability to hit any note directly with the same ease as a touch typist hits a letter, automatically, without needing to think much. |

What are the most effective ear training methods ? Ability to sing an interval directly is a basic skill. Using some tune as a reference will prevent us from mastering that skill. (Do you look down your keyboard while typing? You can, but one should learn to type without looking, right?). |

What's the difference between a G♭ and an F#? +1 for the 'functional differences'. In Equal Temperament if f# and gb are not same, something is terribly wrong. IMHO it's all about whether we have a (raised) F or (lowered) G in our scale/chord there. We can't call "D-Gb-A" as D Chord, can we? |
