-1: It has nothing to do with finger strength (5 is used so often as the melody finger that its strength must be sufficient for higher level pianists). It has everything to do with ease of playing. Playing that passage well at speed with one hand is quite difficult.

Also note that at the college level and above, all solo performances are always memorized. I have never seen a soloist have a score near in case they forget.

comment How do classical composers write music?
Also recall that composers are generally the ones who actually progress the performer's ability on instruments by demanding performances that are difficult or impossible at the time of composition. Two examples: 1) Stravinsky's Rite of Spring starts with a bassoon solo which was so high it sounded "pinched". Today's bassoonists can play that high more easily, and now it doesn't quite have the sound it used to. 2) When told that a soloist would need six fingers to perform his concerto, Arnold Schoenberg replied, "I can wait."
