I'm a music educator, trombonist, photographer, amateur guitarist and technology aficionado. I enjoy thinking and learning about an incredibly wide range of subjects, from astrophysics and biology to geology, politics, volcanology and zoology. As a result, I have an incredible ability to get completely lost on the internet.

comment Does one play a song better after “sleeping on it”?
I've noticed in many areas as well, including attention span. I put off a music history paper… perhaps a little longer than I should have… but instead of staying up all night to finish, I went to bed and got up earlier to finish. I was able to retain my concentration, and in fact seemed to connect the ideas I'd read about the day prior much more easily than as I was digesting them. It's an interesting phenomena, but I believe it's also one of the theories for why sleep evolved: to give our brain time to form and cement connections learned during the day.

comment How do I continue improving my saxophone technique?
Absolutely all about tone, and that's a very difficult thing to teach after the beginning stages. I also second the experienced sax teacher. A good place to start might be a college near you that has a music program. Any good second-year and up music education major who plays sax as a primary instrument will be able to take the original asker quite a ways, until they are comfortable paying/traveling more for a more experienced teacher.

comment What are the characteristics of Negro Spiritual vocal arrangements?
(cont'd) These performers don't have the right mentality. In most cases in a spiritual it isn't about nailing all the notes with perfect tone, it's about letting your soul out, praising God, and getting rid of the intense emotion of a difficult life. (I'm not African-American OR religious, so this mostly second-hand info from college music education. But make sure once you get the composition style the way you want it (hopefully you get some good answers), you realize it'll take a good choir willing to FEEL it in order to make it sound good.

I don't have the answer you're looking for, but I will say this: depending on how the singers actually PERFORM it, it can sound like a spiritual, or it can sound like, as my choral professor called it: "a bunch of white middle-class kids standing stock still and singing the notes on a page." Meaning that composition is only half the story… the interpretation and the feel and mentality of the performers is what makes a piece. For example the example you gave doesn't strike me as a spiritual not because of the compositional style, but the performance style. It's too note-perfect and clean.

comment My fingers are huge; how do I adjust on a piano?
I've had a similar problem in the past. I never really found a great solution, although I did try putting a tiny bit of something "greasy" on the SIDES of the fingers. Not the bottoms, just the sides so they won't stick to the black keys when trying to depress a white key. That said… I wasn't training to be a pianist, I was learning functional skills for music education purposes, so I only used this on a few exams. It helped, but really isn't a solution if you want to be a good player.

comment Recommended seating in a concert hall during Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2
I think you'll be happy with that… the front of the balcony in most halls is some of the best acoustics. I answered based on (in my opinion) the best combination of acoustics and visuals, not exclusively one or the other, so I think you'll find it a good balance. Enjoy!

comment Why does this dual Flying V have the tuners on the back body in addition to the headstock?
To add to Stuart Colville's answer, I assume this is just for practicality on an electric-style headstock, as a standard acoustic twelve-string has space on both sides of the headstock for tuners. Gotta save space somewhere, I guess.

comment Which instrument can a person play with 2 malformed fingers on each hand?
Trombone is my baby, and it's definitely easily modifiable. I made myself a brace to basically squeeze the left (stationary) hand between the brace and the left hand slide grip, so I can actually play without gripping with my left hand at all. Very comfortable, and takes a lot of stress off. There are multiple inventions like that, and you can easily come up with one yourself too, as I did. Again though, the biggest thing is finding something you enjoy; your body and brain will adapt to what you have to work with, and if you enjoy it, you'll advance faster than you think!

comment Is there a good Guitar Chord building web site?
There's also an app called Guitar Tools, by Planet Waves, which is great as it has both types of chord lookup. You can name the chord and scroll through different voicings, OR you can punch in your fingerings and it'll tell you the chord. (It also has a scale tool, tuner and metronome). My only complaint is that I can never remember which type of chord lookup tool I need; they're rather cryptically named. itunes.apple.com/us/app/planet-waves-guitar-tools/…

comment How does lack of sleep affect the singing voice?
The corrective surgery IS relatively risky; so much that most specialists will recommend months of complete vocal rest before recommending surgery. One slip of the knife, and a singer is done singing for life, possibly done talking too. So usually that's looked at as a last resort, for a very talented singer who wants nothing else in life. Hopefully the original questioner doesn't let it get that far!

The time frames you mention are correct, but depend greatly on the overall singing habits of the singer. If overall, the singer is singing healthily, correctly, and not pushing themselves beyond their normal ranges, and the fatigue is the only problem, nodes would take a long time to develop. (Think many years to a decade). On the other hand, if the singer is improperly trained, or is relatively young/new, is not singing as healthily as (s)he could be, AND makes a habit of singing while greatly fatigued, then they could develop sooner.
