comment Software for microtonal MIDI?
How much the pitch wheel changes the pitch should be configured on any half-decent synth, software or not.

The problem here is the lack of definition of "trouble".

revised What's the difference between the “smooth” strings and the “rough” strings?
Added "plain" as this user hasn't migrated yet and can't do it himself. "plain" is way more common than "unwound".

comment Boiling/washing used guitar/bass strings - is it worthwhile?
Note that it's very hard to get a string back on if you cut off the excess string after mounting it. Which means you have to play the bass guitar with unsightly strings sticking out of the guitar head, and potentially hitting things and people, which is why I never did this.

comment How to maximize band rehearsal time?
I don't understand the relation between the topic and the question. The question seems to be "how do I get my bandmates to rehearse a song more", completely different from maximizing the rehearsal time in general, which seems to be to be more about being efficient.

comment Acoustic/Electric Guitars
@Alex: The way you formulate it by starting with "IMHO, it's generally not a good idea to buy an acoustic/electric that lists for anything less than $1000." comes off as saying "Don't buy a guitar unless you have a thousand bucks". That you later give a different recommendation only partly saves it.

And +1 for cheap Yamahas. I think they make guitars like you make bikes: Mass production with precision parts. Result: Boring guitars, but very well worth the price. I got a Yamaha acoustic that was the only one I tried in it's price range that didn't have "dead" notes.

@yossarian: I have an electric/acoustic (Weird name, it's an acoustic with a mic in it) that I bought for around a 100 bucks (quite a long time ago, but it was dirt cheap even then) including a soft case. Is it a good guitar? No. Is it good enough? Heck yeah! Do I use it? No, not since I bough a $500 Yamaha five years ago, because it's better.

-1 I think all responses in the type of "never pay less that X" is misguided. I agree that you generally get what you pay for in acoustic guitars, but the end effect of this is that you tell people "don't play guitar unless you have a thousand bucks to spare". Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. You are slightly saved by the recommendation to buy the best acoustic guitar you can afford, but the "Never buy X" then becomes pointless and may scare somebody away.

comment How can I prevent the noise my guitar pick makes?
Yup. And also bend the string less, hence making for less volume from the string.

Note that a thinner pick will cause more pick sounds on an acoustic guitar, as the pick sound there comes from the pick directly, and not via the strings. :-)

comment How can I develop an interesting or challenging 8-Beat rock rhythm?
@xylar: That's probably a good idea. The chorus should be simple and easy to sing a long too (as well as having a hook) while the verses need to keep interest up until the next chorus, so I think that works. And indeed "Evil" does exactly that. :)

This may be far enough from the desired "simple" rhythm to make your bandmates unhappy though. :-) Interpols "Evil" is a good example of using syncopation and other tricks to have a interesting rhythm to what is basically a song set in a straight 8 rhythm. Remember though that only the drummer in a bands needs to be able to play (Ref: Joy Division), so the band is off to a good start. :-)
