comment How can I develop an interesting or challenging 8-Beat rock rhythm?
@xylar: That's probably a good idea. The chorus should be simple and easy to sing a long too (as well as having a hook) while the verses need to keep interest up until the next chorus, so I think that works. And indeed "Evil" does exactly that. :)

This may be far enough from the desired "simple" rhythm to make your bandmates unhappy though. :-) Interpols "Evil" is a good example of using syncopation and other tricks to have a interesting rhythm to what is basically a song set in a straight 8 rhythm. Remember though that only the drummer in a bands needs to be able to play (Ref: Joy Division), so the band is off to a good start. :-)

comment How to extend and strengthen low end of vocal range? (I need about a whole tone extra.)
I doubt it. Rather the shouting at the pub means the chords are slightly irritated and inflamed.

comment How do professional accompanying musicians (seem to) figure out songs instantly?
I suspect the main trick is to be lazy, and follow the lead. After one repetition of the chord pattern, often just 4 bars, you got it and can join in properly.

No direct experience myself on this, but I'm told the drummer and bassist can benefit from practicing extra together to become a solid rhythm unit.
