I play guitar on my own, at open mic nights, and as part of a weekly get-together for guitarists, and as part a reggae band, for fun.

comment Alternating fingers or direction?
If it sounds OK, and you can do it comfortably, then it's legitimate.

comment Floyd Rose string tension and action question
For a given pitch, string gauge and scale length, tension should be equal. So check whether this guitar has a longer scale than you're used to (in which case maybe use lighter strings).

comment Do ear plugs have a big effect on ability to hear the music?
@Gabe audiences like to be overwhelmed. As described, loudness covers up imperfections. Even with earplugs in, a loud bass will whack you in the chest. And, loud music drowns out annoying people who chat through gigs.

comment Do ear plugs have a big effect on ability to hear the music?
As an audience member I find that singing along feels odd because I can hear my own voice so clearly rather than feeling part of a crowd. Googling around, singers seem to say that earplugs are helpful but take some practice.

In a small rehearsal room with acoustic drums, and everyone else turned up to match the drummer, it can be loud enough to justify plugs.
