@Tim - yes, brainfart on my part. Many guitarists prefer mic to DI because they believe their speaker adds tone, they can play with feedback etc. DI is much less hassle for the soundman.

@NReilingh a balanced cable (we're talking XLR) can take instrument-level signals along long signal runs, so you don't need to amplify first. A typical "big gig" setup would be guitar -> pedals -> guitar amp -> mic -> DI -> mixer -> PA amp
