I play guitar on my own, at open mic nights, and as part of a weekly get-together for guitarists, and as part a reggae band, for fun.

When decreasing string gauge on a bass guitar, will I need to adjust the truss rod? No specific recommendations, but Google returns plenty of results, and they don't tend to contradict one another. |

What are the most common ways to “decorate” a melody? +1, and yet this demonstrates the problem with the question. It's a long answer from a classical perspective. A folk musician would give an equally long answer with no overlap. You wouldn't be able to objectively choose a "correct" answer. |

What are the most common ways to “decorate” a melody? Per music.stackexchange.com/faq#dontask I think the whole intent of the question is a bad fit for Stack Exchange, both for the "imagine a whole book" reason, and for the "chatty, open ended" potential. Dozens of us could chip in with potential additions to your list (although the site doesn't appear popular enough now). I do encourage you to create more focussed questions about the topics you deleted. |

A total newbie wants to learn how to write songs. What does he need? Just a different way of presenting the same information. The image is the famous cover of a 1970s punk fanzine. |

A total newbie wants to learn how to write songs. What does he need? Yep, the scales are independent of the thing that makes the sounds (there is some extra complexity to do with the naming of notes on brass instruments, but I suggest you ignore that until you need it) |

A total newbie wants to learn how to write songs. What does he need? Cm is straying outside the key of C major. That's not to say you can't do it. There are no rules, only conventions. Sticking to conventions is good for beginners because they're conventions that have become common for a reason. |

What are the most common ways to “decorate” a melody? But, just as a note, in the absence of any other factors, when two notes are played simultaneously, the higher pitched one tends to be the one that perceived as dominant. |

What are the most common ways to “decorate” a melody? Can I suggest that this question is way too broad. There are at least three different, only vaguely related, questions in the text, and the main one invites a list with no natural end. |

What exercises can I do to improve my timing? Returning to GarageBand having played with the driver settings, and locking tracks to ease CPU load, it does seem as if latency was a big contributor to the problem, so it seems as if my own timing is actually OK (phew). However, good to leave this up for others. |

Is it good/bad to play guitar with low tension string? What is it about the Les Paul that makes it worth mentioning here? Shorter scale? Something else? |
