I play guitar on my own, at open mic nights, and as part of a weekly get-together for guitarists, and as part a reggae band, for fun.

comment What are the advantages of learning to play on your own versus learning from a teacher?
Never had lessons - but I've been playing 20 years and I'm still not all that good. I'm certain if I'd had a teacher I'd have improved 10 times faster.

@tim probably hit the 'phase' button on the mixing desk, which has the same effect.

@tim vaguely I suppose. Although the mic equivalent of the humbucker is the balanced cable. It's more like the stage version of noise-cancelling headphones.

Good decision. I upvoted Tim.

Yeah we're hovering between the practical and the hypothetical. Nylon is obviously lighter than steel. Other metals have different densities to steel - but AFAIK nobody's making non-wound strings from metals other than steel. And if they did, the difference would definitely be measurable, but I'm not sure it would be big enough to notice when playing.

@Tim Width and weight aren't the same thing. Two strings could have equal weight and tension, but one could be wider (made of a lighter material).
