Why is the recorder a good instrument to start with? Handedness is not an issue for learning the recorder with left-hand on top. Even with separate foot joints, the double-holes found in Baroque and modern recorders are sized for right-hand down playing and that is the only way one should learn. Those who learn otherwise can become experts; I know of a couple and they wish they could switch but alas, that's truly difficult. |

Why is the recorder a good instrument to start with? Most answers below are reasonable, lack of alternative melody instruments is also a good reason: perhaps only the harmonica could be successful, but that's a much more complicated instrument to make and requires more fine breath control, imho. |

High D on Tenor Recorder Let me add to this good answer that "open throat" is another way of saying to keep your jaw and neck muscles relaxed. It can help to imagine that your head is a balloon lifting off your shoulders. Usually, a very small opening is all that is needed for the thumb, very small. You'll get it eventually. |

What is a transposing instrument? For completeness let me add that the recorder family is non-transposing, so players learn new fingerings for each key/clef: C (soprano, tenor) and F (alto, bass) are the most common; G, D, and Bb are useful for advanced playing. Advanced players can read any clef ancient or modern, figure out which instrument fits the range and then how to finger it by pretending to be on a different instrument in a different clef with a different key signature. |

What are the feelings & emotions behind chords? The absolute pitch example is true, but only when using equal temperament. If you instead choose a meantone tuning you'll get quite a different sound and feeling as you tranpose a tune. |
