What to play instead of chords with an informal group? Oh yeah- don't forget to listen to the other musicians a lot and know when to not play. A little banjo can go a long way - like plucking one note per backbeat or per measure or wherever there's space in the arrangement. |

What to play instead of chords with an informal group? Cool. You can play any note at any time. But it's usually expected that you'll mostly play notes contained within the current chord or at least the current scale/key. Try developing riffs around the root or the 5th note of each chord. The chord shapes can be useful for developing riffs too-- you don't need to get all fingers on the shape at once, but you can think of them as important milestones to hit. |

What is the right age to start learning to play violin? There is a physiological advantage to starting earlier. I'm amazed at how my kids (after a few years of Suzuki) can use all five left-hand fingers pretty much equally, but my pinky finger is still slow, clumsy and weak after many years practicing guitar as an adult. |

I've heard of advanced performers taking Dalcrose Eurhythmics classes- would such classes be appropriate for a beginner too? +1, my kids take Dalcroze Eurhythmics classes at their Suzuki Institute summer program and it's one of their favorite things because it's so fun. |
