comment I am a beginner piano player, have no idea how to emphasize a downbeat
I think you misread. I 'beat' myself up endlessly about accuracy, and it is not that she leaves gross errors uncorrected. I think that my point is that expression comes from tiny adjustments, not on the scale of 'deviation from tempo' or 'rubato'.

comment What interval should frets be placed for the Tar (Persian Lute)?
I can't resist. "Don't Fret, someone will be helpful eventually."

comment Early-intermediate Ralph Vaughan Williams Piano?
@oge normally I'd shrug, but as part of the beta process I agree with you. Advertising discussions of topicality and such is good.

comment Looking for a 'Danse Macabre' baroque antecedent
I'm embarassed to say that the only Dies Irae that I'm sure that I recognize is not the same melody as Danse Macabre, which may well merely indicate a lacuna in my musical education.

I'm not sure I care to call this in the same bucket with attempts to play shazam by remote control with pop songs, but that's just my opinion.

@Ras Um, a list of pieces of music on the theme of 'Danse Macabre' doesn't shed much light on the melodic antecedents of Saint-Saens.

@Ras I started there. I didn't spot anything in the Danse Macabre page on wikipedia, did I miss something, or is there some interesting connection drawn on some other page?

Have you see Cooke? He's got enough scale-related ideas to keep a person hopping for a very long time, and is kind of a hoot if you like old books.

comment Sibelius op .75 Number 5: is the composer a bit sloppy, is my edition a bit sloppy, or am I missing something
Many thanks. It's cheering that my teacher and I had tentatively reached the same conclusion.

comment Why are violin bows longer than viola bows, than cello bows, than double-bass bows ?
Q: Why are violas bigger than violins? A: They aren't. The violinists heads are bigger.

Yes, an actual comma written above the staff. I've seen them before but never in the same piece with a fermata.

I am reminded of the old joke about the relative sizes of violas and violins.
