@evanrmurphy not "discontinued", but "fixed" at version 2.3; development has stopped but the software is still stable and available.

@SRiss regarding teaching, I was referring to being a teaching assistant, but both teaching privately and in the classroom will certainly enhance your musicianship. You will learn a subject or technique much more as a teacher than as a student. regarding independent study, I was referring to directed study with a faculty mentor - not only in performance but in other aspects of music. The types of jobs that graduates get, and the proportions of teachers:performers:producers:other:unrelated jobs among graduates could be a good indicator of the program's success at developing musicians.

comment Are there in-depth music theory books that can serve as a compendium?
I think that this question would be easier to understand if you did not use the term 'lexicon'; in the present form, it is not clear to me why you would be asking for a music theory book instead of a music dictionary.

@Tom I wouldn't argue, but you are welcome to edit my answer as it is CW. Perhaps the question should be too. My point is that it is a consideration, not that a position would be garaunteed but whether one would be a big fish in a small pond, vice versa, or other.
