How can I significantly improve my hand independence on piano? I've been teaching myself piano recently and started trying the Inventions. Good to know I'm on the right track. |

Are fingertips supposed to hurt and get calluses from playing the violin ? @Willie Hah, yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks! |

How can I overcome the fear of performing in front of an audience? Might be, not too sure. 7/11 tends to localize their selection, so they might have it if there's demand for it in your area. |

How can I overcome the fear of performing in front of an audience? @Binary Phile -- Do you ever actually drink coffee when you do that? Because for me caffeine just makes things even worse. Then again, I have an unusually low tolerance to caffeine. |

My fingers ache after practice. What can I do about it? Also, the only reason it's short is because it's an easy question to describe -- not because it's trivial. |

My fingers ache after practice. What can I do about it? @Matthew Whether this question is about how to avoid hurting your fingers while you're playing or how musicians generally remedy the problem when it does happen, it's relevant to musicians and it's something that a good guitarist would be very well qualified to answer. I strongly disagree with closing this question. |

What to play instead of chords with an informal group? That's actually the same tuning as violin and mandolin. Maybe you could check out the repertoire for those instruments. The Violin II parts of orchestral and string quartet pieces might give you some inspiration, albeit probably not in your style. Bach could be especially good since his music generally has interesting counterpoint. If you're interested, imslp.org is a good place to look. |

How to transcribe music by ear? I find that the hardest task for me when I'm transcribing is figuring out the middle pitches of chords. Sometimes it seems like a pitch is there, so you write it in, but then after a while you realize that you're really just reinforcing a fifth redundantly. |

Learning an alternative moving-do solfege — futile? Yeah, I definitely wouldn't bother trying to popularize something like this. The main reason I'm really interested in this myself is because I've developed a compulsive habit of solfeging everything I hear, so it's frustrating when I can't keep up. I do admire your friends who can "sing chords in their head" -- that would be a really practical skill to have. Thanks for the great discussion yet again! |
