I play the double bass, electric bass, most brass instruments - with a preference for the low - and some other instruments, as well as sing (choir, á capella and solo). I know a fair bit of music theory and arranging, as well as some musical acoustics. I have a huge crush on musical instruments in general. My main focus is jazz and related genres, but I find myself in other contexts now and then.

comment What does a number inside a parentheses in a chord name mean? Example: B(7)#9b9
Note: For normal notation of chords the parentheses around chord extensions are merely there for improved readability and does not signify lesser importance, and certainly not that they are to be omitted. Omitting extension notes or other notes could however be done by the discretion of the performer.

comment My mandible is abnormal — can I play the trumpet?
Some trumpeters have their mouthpieces bent by an instrument maker in order to achieve another angle of the trumpet when playing (or to compensate for an overbite). I understand that there is a risk of breaking the mouthpiece in the process, so be prepared for extra expenses, should you choose to try this.

comment How do I make funk rhythm guitar sound fuller and nicer?
But there's nothing wrong with plain dominant 7 chords. You might want to try to voice them with the seventh and third at the bottom and the root and/or fifth on top.

@TimH: Even if the chord symbols say dominant 7 you can add extensions at your own discretion (especially in funk or other jazz related genres). Just make sure that the extended notes don't conflict with notes of the melody, i.e. that the extended notes don't end up a semitone from a melody tone of the same scale step (e.g. don't play a natural 9 extension if the melody is on a b9, etc). Selecting extension notes that are diatonic to the key signature will likely work. :-)

Are you really supposed to play full 5-6 string "simple" b7 chords? I would have expected more "trebly" 2-4 (top) string chords with 9 and 13 chord extensions/colorings. All in quite simple, but strict and tight rhythm.

comment Magen Abot Scale - Indigenous Recordings
Hmm. Both these examples uses the harmonic minor scale a lot (or mainly) with some variations (such as b7). I didn't hear any minor seconds (b2) or major thirds (3) (with one exception), but a lot of perfect fifths (5) and natural seconds (2). So to my ears these examples don't use the scale formula you listed. I only had a quick low focus listen though. (As a side note different modes of the harmonic minor scale are at the core of jewish klezmer music.)
