comment What notation systems exist for indicating rhymes, alliteration and cadence in rap lyrics?
ok, ok. Two notations in wide use. And I've seen many musicians who use piano roll notation to learn songs and communicate. I'm working on a way to use it for performance as well pianocheetah.com/tutorial/img/screen2.png basically take piano roll and use all of standard notation's good ideas in this format. Eh, we're way off topic.

comment How much digital piano polyphony is really needed for classical music?
well, as I say in 1) and 2), some manufacturers count one note = one voice. some sneak by with stereo being 2, etc. I was assuming 1 note = 1 voice and dividing the 88 by 12 (12 notes per octave including accidental) then multiplying by 7 (7 notes in your average major scale). 88/12*7 is somewhere around 52. 2 adjacent notes will sound really dissonant. You'll find some of that, but not tons.

comment Is it learned or innate our reaction of happiness or sadness in music?
it's both. our brains are wired from birth (most likely) or at least very early on for either the 12 tones or multiples/subsets thereof. there's a whole lot of research that's been done. But I have no references for ya - that's on you. It's kind of the main question of music theory - Why/how is music the way it is? Why/how does it sound good?

comment What exactly does practising scales teach?
I wish the answers paid more attention to this part of the question: 'what specifically it teaches you that doesn't come from playing music.`

comment When practicing on my instrument - which is more important - quantity or quality?
i agree. ideally sticking to just a couple bars until those bars are perfect, then picking the next set of tricky bars. if the piece is at your level, not all the bars will need to undergo "rigorous treatment"
