I'm Elias Dorneles: software engineer, musician and addicted to learning things.

I like open source software, Udacity/KhanAcademy/Coursera, Python, Bash, Groovy & Grails, Javascript, GNU/Linux/Ubuntu, Wikipedia, fingerstyle guitar, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and reading everything that I can.

comment My mandible is abnormal — can I play the trumpet?
Just in case you guys care, I've got myself a trumpet about a week after this reply. This is the sort of stuff I am troubling my neighbors lately: vocaroo.com/i/s1pPQdU9h8lj -- it sounds bad, I know, but it's been fun anyway. Thanks for your encouragement. =)

comment As a beginner guitarist is it worth learning to play lead guitar early on?
I wouldn't worry much about goals, too -- when you are beginning, that is usually an unknown unknown. So, I still think the best advice is: just learn to play tons of songs. You'll end up learning all the rest in the process, and be more prepared to maybe adapt your goals.

@CarlWitthoft Well, that happened when I was a kid many years ago, I don't have a music teacher anymore. Maybe I should find one, now. Thanks for the hint!

Well, my lips do seem a bit weird when my mouth is relaxed -- my mouth does not really closes when relaxed, you see. But I feel better knowing now what it can take. Thank you very much!

comment Can all notes be produced using only the trumpet's valves?
Think of the possible combinations, for 3 valves with 2 possible states there are only 8 combinations. That's too few, you can't fit not even one full chromatic scale in 8 notes.

comment What is a good solo to learn in the major scale?
I don't think there are rules to learn improvisation. There are tools that can help you to get better, yes, but rules? There are plenty of great musicians that have learnt the hard way, simply listening and playing along with records.

comment How to go learn through a book
Some people say it's important that you are always challenging yourself. So, if you are bored with a piece, you may want to try another more difficult one. But you also should come back to it, and learn to build the patience to play a piece EVEN when you are bored...

comment Does Acoustic Blues Guitar Require Use of a Thumb Pick?
I do upstrokes with the thumbpick, momentarily using my index finger to do it. It's not the same thing a flat pick, but it's very alike a heavy one.
