comment What does a conductor actually do?
@Noldorin do you mean "conductor" or did you mean to write "composer?" I say one when thinking the other all the time.

I think you will get answers targeted to your ability level if you specify how long you've been playing the saxophone, how long you've been playing jazz and how in depth your theoretical knowledge is (grade school level knowledge vs taking a college level theory course, you've research this on your own vs you have a private teacher who knows a lot about jazz etc) Just food for thought.

comment Musical factors when picking a good school to go to.
I think that several of these are really thoughtful suggestions. I'd be interested in hearing how some of these (such as "opportunities for independent study"-individual practice aside) can be applied to music. Career opportunities seems like a bit of a stretch to me though. Are you trying to say that what kinds of jobs I can get indicates what kind of training I've had and therefor what ways I've developed as a musician? I also don't understand what you mean by "teaching opportunities." Do you believe teaching privately enhances your own musicianship? Great start, David!

I see that the subjectivity of this question is a potential issue to some users. I did take pains to make sure that it was not a "discussion question" by asking for a complete answer and not a list. But in terms of subjectivity, music cannot be anything but subjective. Yes there are certain finites: the length of an open trumpet in C. But questions like "How would you train for this piece?" and "Is this method good" are completely subjective and argument-prone. I honestly can't see how this is bad subjective, but if you can cite me a particular section, I will happily try to reword it.

comment How can I develop a high register on a brass instrument without creating tension?
I'm afraid I have to go with NReilingh on this one. The same author who was discouraging tension in the throat was discouraging tension in the tongue. However, I really like your thoughts as you relate to whistling. I'll have to think about how your answer intersects with trombone playing.
