comment Do some measures get no numbers, in an opera score?
I think you have it! Based on your answer, I looked more closely at the score. I notice a notation, updated in the question above, which could mean "measure continues on to next system". Conclusion 1: system 1 and the start of system 2 are one big long measure, not two measures as I incorrectly counted. Conclusion 2: nothing in this discussion points to a rule where some measures get no numbers. Conclusion 3: I have not yet found a mistake in the Ricordi critical edition. Conclusion 4: Pat Muchmore is awesome.

musical_coder, that sounds like an answer. Format it as such, and I can give you credit.

@NReilingh Isn't this a shopping rec question? More to the point, doesn't the shopping rec prohibition need some adjusting to make it appropriate for Music.SE?

@NReilingh and all: Revised question to respond to objections that I've answered it myself, or I've figured out the exact features I want. Please reconsider this question.

@NReilingh Example of answers we might get on Music.SE but not on Apple.SE: Harry Connick Jr patent on "system and method for coordinating music display among players in an orchestra.". Or MusicReader on Windows Tablet PCs.

Inspired by What's a good PDF score reading app for iPad?, but worded to focus on "Practice technique" (per FAQ) and not on "shopping recommendations".
