comment Theory behind Bach's deviations from the scale
Just wanted to comment here that I found a really satisfying explanation of this concept in Schoenberg's Functional Structures of Harmony. Chapter 2-3, he specifically mentions Bach's alterations while explaining "ascending" and "descending" alterations of modes.

Aha. Thanks for the explanation. Sorry a bit confused. So are these just simple harmonic progressions? Nothing more to it?

So you see all these as common tone modulations / chromatic mediants? (sorry just learning those concepts -- musicians through history might be twisting in their graves). Another example is the first 3 bars from BWV996 Burrée.

I added another example. The beginning of Allemande BWV996. Am I wrong to think there is a single logic behind these embellishments? Is each one a different case? Perhaps it's just me, but this happens all over Bach?

A minor, apparently. It's bars 15-16 from the typical Cello prelude.

I do know some music. I play classical guitar and I'm familiar with music notation and have a small background with theory.

comment Software to get started on programmable music
No problem =), but what I do want is start with the right tooling from the beginning. Would ableton allow me to do these things? I didn't know Ableton had a programming interface..
