When playing drums behind the beat, what instruments define the actual beat? It's still not totally clear to me. I updated my question and added an example scenario based on your answer. |

When practicing a song with frequently changing time signatures, what is the best way to count in? I accepted this one as it adds some information about the common way to do it in larger ensembles. On a side note (I'm not a native English speaker): what is the correct word for it, do you "count in" or "count off"? |

When practicing a song with frequently changing time signatures, what is the best way to count in? As @JB pointed out, there are hardly any passages without signature changes in this specific piece. Otherwise, I agree of course. |

Practicing drums with metronome and not hearing it's tick Ignore the answers suggesting to change something. It's a good thing! As soon as you can't hear the metronome anymore, you're perfectly on the spot. Consistently hearing the tick just after or before the stroke doesn't work, it's too difficult to decide if it was really precise (consistent enough). As long as you are able to hear the metronome when you're off the beat, there's no need to increase the volume. Anyway, closed headphones or another way of protecting your ear is never a bad idea. |

Recommended book for learning Jazz Music in the piano It's a very good book that gives you a good overview to start with. I'd recommend it! |
