comment Why is the guitar tuned like it is?
+1 I played guitar for years and never really understood what I was doing, I just memorized chords and runs... then I started learning the mandolin and poof everything seems to make sense - but the chords are a pain.

comment How to find equivalent notes on different strings of a mandolin?
Thanks for your answer. I just wanted to let you know that the more I have been playing, it is obvious the benefit of being able to stop the note from ringing when you are done with it and I have come to favor the fretted note vs the open string despite the slight increase in dificulty.

comment What instruments are inexpensive, portable and not too loud?
@AnonJr I agree. I used to take mine with me during my field work in northern AK and although it never had to endure an IED it made it through quite a regular beating!

it would also be useful if you could provide some insight into why you chose these items.

perhaps a thumb piano would be similar but less goofy

I love my recorder and it is very portable but I don't think it would be quiet enough to practice in a normal dorm room

comment What to play instead of chords with an informal group?
thanks. I do fall back on some of the 2-finger mandolin chords but I am hoping to spice things up a bit more

thanks for the link. Its actually not an Irish tenor but a 5 string restrung with 4 heavier strings. It sounds similar but has 22 instead of 14 frets which means I can't reach many of the normal Irish tenor chords (at least with my fingers).

@Eric actually it is a 5 string with the little string removed - essentially a plectrum banjo at this point - but then I found that I liked playing it better with it tuned to 5ths like a tenor.

comment Is it a bad idea to attach my strap just above the nut?
thanks for your thoughts. I wound up accepting @Brazilgrass 's answer based on the very slight margin in upvotes but it doesn't appear to be an open and shut case.

@Brazilgrass, thanks for the input. Given the different opinions I left the question open for a while in the hope that one answer would pull ahead on the upvotes but I guess its time to make the call. So given your slight margin, I will accept your answer and try to rig the strap somewhere other than the neck!
