comment Criteria for speeding up when practicing with a metronome
I've never really approached 'getting faster' using a 'playing it faster in your head' strategy. The whole 'guitar practice' culture I run into seems to use a 'metronome-first' approach.

To put it simply, let's say I'm playing 'difficult-ish' guitar-oriented metal-or-something (think Dream Theater, Satriani, etc)

What are you using to stabilize the Floyd Rose bridge of your Music Man?

Your answer makes a lot of sense. However, a piece of music is not as spontaneous an event as a clogged pipe or mouth condition. Somebody created it. I just think your answer was too "ultimate" regarding the previsibility of music in general. Of course, the very question I asked implies that this previsibility exists in some degree, though.

comment Are there any machine-readable databases of chord progressions available?
In most programming environments, this is as simple as calling up a "URL Decode" function. This "%20" way of encoding characters for transport in URLs is actually a standard: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percent-encoding (this is more of a Stack Overflow question, really lol)

comment I'm looking to build a basic repertoire of Brazilian music. Which songs would you recommend I start with?
One may also keep an eye on the rankings of letras.terra.com.br and/or cifraclub.com.br for songs currently popular monthly/weekly-wise.

These are good options too. The previous suggestions were more in the erudite realm. If you ventrue into popular music, then Roberto and Ivete are very significant. It should be kept in mind, though, that they represent only a fraction of the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira - Brazilian Popular Music) genre. Also, they're hardly "currently trending".

Also, if I may, the proper spellings would be "Água de Beber" and "Manhã de Carnaval". And the Portuguese names for "Girl From Ipanema" and "One Note Samba" are "Garota de Ipanema" and "Samba de uma Nota Só", if that helps :).
