How do I chose my first electrical guitar? Regarding tremolo arm: I am a huge Hendrix fan, and have had several strat guitars, but I have NEVER used the tremolo. The back of strats usually have a plate which can be removed to access the tremolo. You can place a snug-fitting wedge of wood in there to immobilize the tremolo mechanism. So in this case the tremolo has no impact on the tuning. |

What happens when I start to get music “down” to the point where I can play it fluently? This is a cognitive process which transcends music by the way. It is often studied and remarked upon in all fields. I think it may be referred to as subcognition, but my memory is poor. |

Able to recall music in its correct key, but don't have perfect pitch — what is it called? I am inclined to believe that if "perfect pitch" exists at all as a phenomenon, then the person probably possesses it in the absence of musical training, and therefore knowing the name of the note can't be the only criterion. |

Should I mute “unwanted” strings or not when playing power chords? one thing I have noticed since using computer amp sims is that certain simulation setups really accentuate muted strings and they actually muddy up the sound. The cleaner you play, the better off you are in the long run. |

Does shifting vary on a fretted instrument? I would even say that the lack of emphasis on such shifting, and the find-as-you go attitude probably contributes a large part to that thing we call style. |

What are the various methods of tuning the guitar? I do this as well. I also use the 12th fret harmonic and the 7th fret harmonic on the next higher string are the same note. What drives me nuts though is that often the 3 methods wind up with slightly different tunings. In a perfectly intoned guitar, they should be very nearly identical. |

Guitar scales further up the fret board. I won't answer because the correct answers are already up there, but I think it is self-evident that there is a lot of overlap and repetition of the notes on the strings of the guitar (5-8,5-7 is the same as (5-8-10-12). Once one realizes this, one can find virtually the same order of notes in different pattern shapes at different points in the guitar. Once you hit 12th fret, you are "back at the nut" and the patterns all repeat. |

Is it really necessary to have your thumb on the back of the guitar neck? Two examples of guitarists using the thumb for the bass string: ( youtube.com/watch?v=GXcMk6OG1Xc and youtube.com/watch?v=N-TOiT9Gwa0 ). I believe John McLaughlin (mahavishnu orchestra) had training on proper hand technique. I am doubtful Hendrix did. |
