Trying to get that tube sound from a gainclone amp Use a modeler like the Boss GT-10, Digitech RP500 or the Vox Tonelab to get a decent tube sound. |

Is there such a thing as a silent drum set? Note that the electronic kits with mesh heads are about 1/2 as loud as the heads that are like practice pads. You can't hear the mesh heads over the TV in some cases. |

Is there some software tool that analyzes audio to produce pitch information? Transcribe! is a Windows program that can help pick out the notes from a spectrogram, as well as change tempo and pitch independently. It also has other features that make transcription and practice easier. |

What factors affect a guitar's ability to sustain a note? I have 1 minor nit to pick with this answer, which is otherwise well thought out and complete. A Kahler style tremolo does not effect sustain much if at all. It has very small, tight springs and the block is very heavy. |

Are there any publicly available databases ( not just web apps ) of guitar chords? Any reason you can't just compute them? |

What is the best software, to cut a loop out of a song, for rehearsal purposes? There is no need to cut. Use Audacity or Transcribe to set the loop boundaries then just play the loop. |

How important is it for a guitar player to know the notes which make up a chord? @JoshFields: Josh, I've been given "chord sheets" in several contexts from completely informal (here are the chords for "x") to the recording studio (here's my arrangement, we do this in the key of "x"). However my studio experience is limited to the early/mid 80s so YMMV. |
