+1 for accordions (also melodeons, concertinas). They're great fun to play and the chord keys are quite non-linear. Playing an accordion is like reading a "fake book" with a melody line and chords. Keeping the air pressure constant is tricky as well, and some instruments play different notes depending on which way the air is going (like a harmonica). They don't require any intonation or "ear" though.

You get the same thing in military and brass band marches. The last section before the DC is called the trio, and it's often marked as such on the parts. In a march, the lighter orchestration you mention is usually achieved by giving the tune to the horns, with a much dancier, springier feel.

On the contrary, I'd say this is an example of an awful part. There's no indication of dynamics or style at all. The only redeeming quality is that it counts the bars and has a double-barline to indicate phrasing. All the same, I'd sooner play from the guitarist's part than this: if you aren't going to write me a part, at least let me see what I have to fit in with!
