comment What are the best techniques to play overtones in the saxophone?
@NReilingh: I'm not actually quite sure how far "embouchure" extends. Perhaps I am misusing the term, but I've always thought that the muscle behind the chin, under the jaw, but above the neck is part of the embouchure. Is that actually part of the throat?

comment How much baroque music was derived from improvisation?
I think Bach probably also believed that he can improvise better than other people can write. :-)

I do not claim to be really knowledgeable on this matter, but I wonder if you are mixing two facts together. The first is that Baroque music (especially solo performance forms) are big on ornamentation, which are typically supplied/improvised by the performer, though the basic score is written down. Second is the story behind The Musical Offering of Bach.

comment Why are violin bows longer than viola bows, than cello bows, than double-bass bows ?
Ah yes, I forgot about this part. To produce a "smooth" sound on the lower pitch instruments also requires the bow to be heavier (so as to have larger angular momentum and less likely to be "bounced" away by the string). This puts further physical constraints to what Gauthier described.

comment What kind of edition and tuning to use to study Bach's fifth cello suite ?
Why are there two close votes on this? This looks like a reasonable question for this website.

Just to check, do you mean overtones or altissimos?

There is, of course, a different reason for the length of bows of non-full-size instruments: you give shorter bows to kids with shorter arms so they can build up good bowing habit. A 10 year old with a 75 cm bow will never be able to pull far enough to get close to the tip.
