Are short fingers detrimental to becoming a pianist? Hm. If you can reach a 9th, you should be able to play most literature fairly comfortably. I would try tracking down the DeLarrocha exercises. I don't have them, as reach has never been an issue for me. |

Is playing with two hand really necessary in this passage? I agree with mjibson. It's not bad in terms of intervals, but try finding a good fingering for it. The best 1 handed fingering I can work out atm is 45242413451512 and that's hard to play fast. Also, it'll be hard to play that staccato. |

Important to know which note you are playing? I agree that you shouldn't trust your motor memory. I usually do analysis and then break the music into chords. In the early stages of memorization I usually only bother to remember the chords. If you forget something, then you can just fake it. On the other hand, as the piece matures, I do remember every "note", but I'm not thinking "G B A C blah blah" as I perform... |

Should I lift my finger before I hit a key when playing a piano? Hmm, this is a good answer, though I disagree that the primary purpose of the release is adding emotional intensity. In my opinion, keyboard choreography needs to serve the purpose of positioning you ideally for the following passages as well as allowing you to "reset" technical debt you've accumulated while playing. (though ideally there would be none.) Contrast Yakov Kasman with Jon Nakamatsu (1997 winner.) By comparison, his style is extremely conservative, though undoubtedly intense. |

What is the foundational book of Czerny finger exercises for piano? Pretty much all scales will have the same fingerings. Peter Feuchtwangler, who I admire very much, worked out some alternate fingerings, if you can track those down. They're very nice. |
