Apr 5 at 10:40 | comment | added | Tim | @ToddWilcox - I don't even think there's a question on tuning toms on this site, so feel that it's a valid question. Thanks for your suggestions.
Apr 5 at 10:40 | comment | added | Todd Wilcox | One other thing: perhaps your tom tuning could be revisited. One effective way to tune toms is to tune the heads to match resonant peaks of the shell and then adjust from there. With that strategy, an important ingredient in the relationship between toms is their diameters. In short, another way to do it is to buy tom sizes that work well together and then tune the toms to their natural resonances. Again, the snare is usually treated the same way.
Apr 5 at 10:35 | comment | added | Todd Wilcox | Those are opinion questions. You’ve decided how you want your toms to sound together. Make the same decision with the snare as if it’s another tom. Regarding snares: tighter means shorter snare sound, looser means longer. Some even adjust for specific songs. There’s no right answer.
Apr 5 at 6:59 | comment | added | Tim | @AndyBonner - I thought tis site was a compendium of all things music. And there was no reference to tuning snares. Hence my question - also, I need to know from experts that I can trust...
Apr 5 at 6:56 | comment | added | Tim | @ToddWilcox - I tune the toms to each other, as well as getting both heads in tune. How does the snare fare in this arrangement? And how tight should the strainer be?

Apr 4 at 23:12 | comment | added | Judy N. | If you're expecting something you're not getting from Google (coincidence: I have been literally all over snare-tuning Google results in the last 72 hours) you probably ought to say what

Apr 4 at 17:04 | comment | added | Todd Wilcox | Throw off the snares and tune it just like a tom.
Apr 4 at 16:52 | comment | added | Andy Bonner | What's been undesirable about the results you've been getting? I assume this is about "how to know when it's right," not the mechanics. Also, did you try googling? I see dozens and dozens of results. Maybe edit to say more about how they're unsatisfactory.
