Playing in an orchestra, some notes (e.g. the middle d or on certain instruments c and c#) are way off in some keys. Your embouchure can adjust your intonation - I personally can go up and down by about half a step. Also there are alternate fingerings for some notes, to make them more in tune in certain keys, when playing in a band or orchestra. The sax doesn't just sound "right" if you press the keys for the note, even if it seems like it.

May 27, 2016 at 15:49 | comment | added | Laurence | All trumpets have slides on all three valves, which may be preset. Professional-grade trumpets also have a dynamically-adjustable third valve slide, often also one on the first valve. youtube.com/watch?v=10jSplHmvQU
May 27, 2016 at 15:23 | comment | added | Tim | @LaurencePayne - my trumpet has slides on all three valve tubes, but once they're set the thing's in tune.
May 27, 2016 at 15:07 | comment | added | Laurence | Real-life instruments don't behave QUITE like laboratory experiments! Their tubing has bends, the bore is not constant, the mouthpiece has an effect - what comes out is rarely the strict harmonic series! But trumpets have finger-operated slides on 1st and 3rd valves, plenty of "alternative fingerings" and there's considerable scope for "playing in tune" (equal tempered or otherwise) by adjusting the embouchure.
