Nov 22, 2015 at 7:46 | comment | added | Neil Meyer | You know what is really fun. Learning standard notation and sight reading music with all the indications of both rhythm and pitch. Sure it takes a little while to learn to read standard notation but it so worth it

Nov 20, 2015 at 19:41 | comment | added | amalgamate | I feel like your question should be more along the lines of: how do I recognize a good teacher or a bad one? And then perhaps that question would become a duplicate of this one: music.stackexchange.com/q/2556/15535

Nov 20, 2015 at 17:25 | comment | added | Tim | It's very subjective. One teacher may be great for one student, but not that good with another. The personality of each comes into play, for starters. If they teach at an institute, one would think they ought to be good, but there are many criteria involved. And some may or may not suit you. First hand experience is probably the answer.
