just to give an example off the top of my head where I certainly would write explicit chords, have a listen to this. youtu.be/NkCjGjt4e_4 . For me that'd be C-, B°, E♭6/B♭, Aø, A♭7, G+7 (or in more ASCII notation, Cm, Bdim, E♭6/B♭, Am7(♭5), A♭7, Gaug7 ) If you wrote that as just Cm over a bunch of roots, you'd lose way too much harmonic information there.
