what I mean is how do metal vocals work? Do they start out learning classical/Western training: breathing, vocalises and arias and then specialize in metal vocals?

same for other forms of vocals: jazz, Bollywood, etc.

  • Very different techniques, even between classical and pop type singing, so I doubt if anyone wanting to become a metal vocalist would be drawn to classical training first. – Tim Oct 16 '17 at 15:21
  • oh okay so they just go to the specialized vocals then – Lenny Oct 16 '17 at 15:48

Yeah, I'd have a hunch that the learning you need to keep screaming and death growling without losing your voice is a separate set from classical training. – Dekkadeci Oct 16 '17 at 17:02
  • Find yourself a good voice teacher who specializes in the type of style you want to be able to perform. If you are in the USA, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, or NATS, is a good place to start to find the right person in your area. Some of the basic technical aspects of singing are things you need to learn regardless of style, especially breathing, posture, and air flow. – J. Sheldon Aug 23 '19 at 3:15
  • Although I bet metal vocalists do train themselves and practice much more than I would have guessed... – user45266 Aug 23 '19 at 17:19
