I'm trying to learn folk guitar, Mark Knopfler's "celtic-folk" style if to be precise, and it is hard time for me to find any good sources on the internet.

So far I did Justin Guitar's folk course and can play several 4-bit patters without problems, but it gets me to nowhere. For example: I can pick some melodies by ear but fail to incorporate them into fold patterns - I simply can't understand which cords I should use over the melody.

What is the next step I should take and where should I look? Whenever I google "Mark Knopfler guitar" I get only tutorial for his solos.

  • How much of Mark's technique have you studied? There are a lot of free and pay for tutorials online for his particular fingerpicking style. It's one of the first guitar styles I learnt, and I still love it – Doktor Mayhem Jul 7 '18 at 18:57
  • So far none, for all of the tutorials I could find were basically for "Sultans of Swing solo". I learned normal folk picking, but without the ring finger, just like Knopfler. – Riddle-Master Jul 8 '18 at 15:04
  • Okay. Maybe consider not looking for free tutorials. I have, though, found free tutorials for most of Dire Straits first three albums, and pay for tutorials on all their work. – Doktor Mayhem Jul 8 '18 at 20:48
