Can anybody tell me which sound card is the best for ABLETON? Maybe the Focusrite Scarlett?

I use Ableton and I just bought a soundcard (Steinberg UR22mkII). I have problems making it work properly. I downloaded the drivers and updated the device, but when I plug it and choose ASIO on the preferences window, I cannot hear anything and I can only see very low amplitude waves when using the microphone. If I choose MME/DirectX, I can hear the sound, but microphone is dead.

  • Could you provide the Ableton version, and some information about your microphone? – Alex Y Nov 7 '18 at 2:52
  • Yes. It is version 9.7. The microphone is a Philips (an old one) – user54088 Nov 7 '18 at 4:07
  • Are you using 9.7 64 bit or 32 bit? The 64 bit version has some issues with ASIO drivers that can be challenging to diagnose, and for most home use cases, 32 bit will work alright. Try installing the 32 bit version and see if the ASIO driver works in that version. – Alex Y Nov 7 '18 at 4:28

To answer what I believe is the heart of your question, the Steinberg UR22mkII is a perfectly respectable audio interface that should be compatible with Ableton Live 9 via ASIO driver.

The Focusrite Scarlett line is also excellent, but both Ableton and Steinberg state that their products are compatible, so if it is not working, their support teams may be able to help troubleshoot any technical issues.

My strongest suspicion for the cause of your issue is the ASIO driver not functioning correctly. Completely deleting all the ASIO drivers through Windows Device Manager, checking that you are downloading the most recent version, and then re-installing the Steinberg driver may solve your problem.
