If Bach's recommendation (as found in his table of ornaments) is to play the first 6 out the possible 8 1/32nd notes for a trill sign written over a quarter note, then should one try to achieve the effect of this by compressing the same relationship of notes to the sustain/rest before the following beat- or is it only a matter of truncating the 1/32nd notes that fall outside of the space of an 1/8th note (just play four 1/32nd notes for an eighth note instead of six 1/32nd notes for a quarter note)?

  • Sustain/rest before the following beat - huh? Please clarify with an example. – Camille Goudeseune Jul 13 '19 at 3:29
