I had been typesetting Orthodox Christian liturgical by using the gregorian style in lilypond. For the "recitatives" where many syllables are sung to one note I have been actually separating them and writing quarter notes for each one. Then, someone helped me with a template (without the gregorian style) which had a quarter note at the beginning of the recitative and one at the end, but I am not sure (my files had string 1 for all 4 parts) how to add back midi.

Here is the file I was sent that I need help adding midi to:

I need help please because every time I try, I keep getting errors.

Thanks.

Here is the correct file I needed help with. As mentioned in the comments, it seems I had inadvertently deleted all my attempts to add midi to the below file.

  • What errors are you getting? When I compile this file it produces a PDF that looks fine, and MIDI file that plays alright. What is the problem you are having exactly? Commented Apr 17, 2019 at 7:06
  • @ElementsinSpace: Sorry. For some reason I had saved the file above with the name of the file I need assistance with. The one I am now sending (in contrast to the above) has the "recitative" done so that only the first note and last note are showing but I have thus far been unable t get midi. The version of the file a, sending does not have my attempt to add midi since I think (on checking just now) I must have deleted my work. Thanks. Commented Apr 17, 2019 at 12:42

To generate a both a PDF and MIDI files when you compile, you just need to add the following lines before you close the last }

\layout { }

\midi {
    \set Staff.midiInstrument = #"string ensemble 1"
}

  • Ok thanks. Just one additional question please: How can I change the default instrument to string ensemble 1? Commented Apr 17, 2019 at 14:30
  • I've edited that into my answer for you now. I put it in the midi line, but you could alternatively put in the the global line Commented Apr 17, 2019 at 14:39
