at 0:01 of this video a soft-muted sounding instrument begins playing and I can not figure out what it is (the one that plays 3 notes and pauses for a short while).

Was also wondering what specific bell instrument is being used that begins playing at the same time.

Excuse the amateur wording of this question, im a music newbie

Sounds like pizzicato strings for me, possibly cellos. – guidot Aug 28 '19 at 14:36
  • The instrument that plays that tune sounds like a violin. But the whole music track might well have been made using synthesized instruments (e.g. using a soundfont). – Rosie F Aug 28 '19 at 15:19
  • I agree with guidot that the "muted instrument" is pizzicato strings - I think on the first pluck, the double basses are playing too, giving the sound more weight. I think the 'bell instrument' is actually just high notes on piano. – topo Reinstate Monica Aug 28 '19 at 20:51
  • @RosieF Those are real strings, not synthesized. – PiedPiper Aug 28 '19 at 22:34

The beginning is a mixture of arco (bowed) and pizzicato (plucked) strings, possibly with a harp or a piano or celesta added.
The high bell-like sound you hear is either a celesta, a mixture of celesta and piano, or (more unlikely) a synthesized sound. The music was composed by Hans Zimmer who prefers 'natural' instruments.

  • Hans Zimmer is really quite the synthesist. You never know when he's 'cheating'. Ever heard of LASS … & wonder who it was originally made for? – Tetsujin Aug 29 '19 at 6:42
