Inspired by @Ian's comment on this answer, I too would like to see a list of famous metal guitarists who routinely play or have played (live or recording) a Fender Stratocaster. As both a fan of the metal genre, and as someone whose first guitar was a strat (off-brand, but still standard design), the answers to this question should inspire metal guitar players (especially beginners) that a strat may not be the hindrance to their musical growth that they might think it is. Many "metal" guitars are variants of superstrats or Frankenstrats. I'm not looking for that here, just actual Fenders, though they can be customized.

Which heavy metal guitarists play a Fender Stratocaster?

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because list questions, where every answer can be equally correct, just don't work on the stack exchange structure. – Tetsujin Sep 27 at 15:56

It's the first in the help centre on just about every site, under 'what not to ask'. There are many old list questions before the guidelines were set, but new ones don't tend to do so well. – Tetsujin Sep 27 at 16:04

This question, and any answers, are not of much help to future readers. The question is hardly about music: practice and theory. Lists are not particularly helpful to visitors to this site. And - routinely or have played, and heavy metal make it vague. Vtc. – Tim Sep 27 at 16:18

@topomorto - I didn't include the vague sample question for good reason. It's not the right sample question. Lists, whether it's 'what's your fave?" or 'how many people played strats?' are equally unimportant to future visitors. This might survive on musicfans, but it doesn't belong here. Anyway, let the membership decide. I don't have any kind of casting vote. – Tetsujin Sep 27 at 17:24

I'll start.

Yngwie Malmsteen plays a signature Fender Stratocaster with scalloped upper frets.

Both K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest have played strats.

Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath played a strat while recording their first album until the pickup broke and he switched to his now-signature Gibson SG.

Don't the guys from Iron Maiden play strats too? – ggcg Sep 27 at 16:20

yeah but not ones with single coils – Neil Meyer Sep 27 at 17:01
  • @NeilMeyer I don't think any of these players used Strats with true single-coil pickups. The bridge pickups Malmsteen originally used (DiMarzio HS-3) have a humbucking coil in them. And are crazy overwound, like 20 kOhm. You're not going to play "Sultans of Swing" with that. :) – Kaz Oct 16 at 23:41
