What kind of whistle sounding instrument is it that for example can be heard throughout this song (first time at 0:47)?

It also serves as the whistle of Mysterious Mose:

I found something called "siren whistle" which shares the characteristic raise and fall of pitch, but looking at a few videos I found the pitch change to be a bit slower, and the timbre not as "pure" but rather a bit more "sawtooth" sounding. Less like a flute/whistle and more like an angry bee if you get what I mean. And it is obviously not a slide whistle. What is it?

I have played with whistles that make this sound but I have no idea what they are called. The pitch is determined by the air speed though. They also have a noticeable resistance when you blow into them. – Legorhin Nov 5 '19 at 16:05

Those examples are indeed siren whistles. As @Legorhin said in their comment, pitch (and speed) is determined by air speed, ie how hard you blow.

  • It is proportional to air speed, although the exact relationship is to the number of times a blade opens or closes an output hole. It just turns out that, due to the deliberate similarity to propellor or fan blades, blowing harder makes the rotation rate increase. If you built a gizmo with a motor driving the blades, then the motor speed would control the frequency and the amplitude would depend roughly on the airspeed. – Carl Witthoft Nov 6 '19 at 19:37
