Jun 6, 2021 at 6:16 | comment | added | Aaron | I have the same issue as @SteveBennett on Big Sur / Chrome. Possibly related to SE's recent change to use system fonts?
Jun 6, 2021 at 2:37 | comment | added | Steve Bennett | @leftround In your answer, all the symbols in the para "It may then well be..."and in the footnote fail to display, but everything else is ok.
Jun 6, 2021 at 2:35 | comment | added | Steve Bennett | @leftaroundabout Of that list, they all display correctly except the last one (quarter note).
Jun 4, 2021 at 11:46 | comment | added | Fattie | graphs@! how awesome. I have an interesting question coming up for you @leftaroundabout !
Jun 4, 2021 at 7:59 | comment | added | leftaroundabout | @SteveBennett I don't understand why this would still be an issue on some platforms... which of these display correctly for you? ♯ (MUSIC SHARP SIGN), 𝄪 (MUSICAL SYMBOL DOUBLE SHARP), † (DAGGER), Ⅳ (ROMAN NUMERAL FOUR), 𝅘𝅥 (MUSICAL SYMBOL QUARTER NOTE)
Jun 4, 2021 at 0:25 | comment | added | Steve Bennett | Btw not sure about other people, but many of your unicode symbols aren't displaying for me (Firefox on MacOS), so it can be hard to make sense of some of the points you're making.

Jun 3, 2021 at 13:10 | comment | added | leftaroundabout | @Tim well, even for strings I'm only showing one possible way how staccato can be implemented – but yeah, from my experience this the gist of how classical string players will usually go about it. Really, the correct point is in Aaron's and Richard's answers though: that staccato does not define any particular note duration or envelope shape, but rather just that the note should be clearly detached. — Your point (and phoog's) that many sources do introduce staccato as simply a halve-shortened note is relevant as well to the OP, but it would become more useful if you referenced them.
Jun 3, 2021 at 12:41 | comment | added | Tim | Given that OP is about string quartet music, this is as good as it gets. +1. Other answers (inc. mine) are less instrument specific.
